emacI don’t know about you, but one of the hardest things for me about navigating these tough economic times is keeping my gadget spending in check. I have a problem, or more accurately, many problems, and they are all shiny, new and electronic. It’d be nice to say that I have enough willpower to forgo these things when the budget isn’t there, but that’s not at all true. I still have to scratch that itch, so I’ve come up with some ways to do so on the cheap.

Closet Excavation

It may not be quite as satisfying as unboxing something brand-new, or buying a big ticket item at retail, but digging around in your closet for old, nearly forgotten hardware and gadgets can actually be pretty satisfying. Especially if you haven’t looked at them in many years, since you’ll often be surprised with what recent software updates or new peripherals…

So, the guy with the chopper ended up trading it for a Cadillac CTS due to my slacking on giving a decision.

Lesson learned on my part, DO NOT HESITATE!

Saving Money 101 – Bartering

gettysburggirl

Bartering is not a new idea.  People have been doing it for centuries.  The country doctor used to be paid in preserves and pies or slabs of beef, the undertaker might take payment from the handyman in the form of a new roof.   In the good financial times since World War II, the concept seemed to almost disappear.  I believe it came to be thought of as degrading – impolite or tactless to query a person about exchanging goods and services.  We wanted everyone to know we had the financial means to pay for anything we needed or desired, and a provider of goods and services wanted to feel they were worth a monetary remuneration.  This kind of pride is not a bad thing.  It causes people to work hard and be successful.

I would argue that, just as the exchange of real dollars indicates something of significant value has changed hands, so…

Why I’m Bartering

The Homesteading Daughter

I’ve decided to start bartering— trading goods and services without the exchange of money.  To facilitate this, I set up a new page on my site listing the current things I need and the things I am able to trade for them.  Obviously, most of these require that you are in or around the Southern Wisconsin/Northern Illinois area where I live; but there are some items you could do via mail.

So here’s why I’m bartering:

-It’s Good for the Environment: We live in a “throw-it-away” society, where if something stops working, begins to wear-out, or we just don’t like it anymore, we throw it away.  We have landfill upon landfill full of our old belongings that could be upcycled or repurposed.

A second issue comes from the environmental impact that the manufacturing of new goods causes.  By swapping goods, we can limit the amount of new items that…

The Exploding Business of Bartering – HBR

Accounting and Small Business /Beverly Shares

Small business takeaways — ideas?   Have you used bartering?   Maybe you should explore!   Cash management and more!

Excerpt:  What do Honda, Haymarket Exhibitions, and your plumber have in common? Bartering. Business bartering is big, and it’s happening at every level. The International Reciprocal Trade Association reports that in 2011 over 400,000 companies worldwide used bartering to earn an estimated $12 billion on unwanted or underused assets.

Our Global Trends research, along with discussions with senior executives around the world, show that in response to tighter credit and budgets companies are exploring new ways to create and capture value. In this context, they see bartering as a way to steer around the restrictions imposed by cash and credit, to extract value from perishable or underperforming assets, and to expand channels to market and find new customers.

My New Barter Blog

This is my first official online blog, YAY!

A little background about myself:

I have been trading for in the vicinity of 6 years now. Knowing currency is useful, it was a paradigm shift to me when I realized that currency could be considered anything of value, rather than just dollar bills.

I began posting “for sale or trade” in ads I would have before just listed up for sale, and I was really shocked to see the amount of responses pouring in with trade offers. It seemed to me like it was obvious the direction I should take after noting how many trade offers I would consistently receive on every ad, well before any cash offers.

From here on out I was hooked to bartering. Since then I have traded guns, cars, atv’s, electronics, antiques, gold, you name it and I probably have had it or an offer to trade for it at one point.

It’s an exhilarating feeling waking up each morning and not knowing who will be offering you what item today! I feel like a “shopaholic” getting a rush from each new item, but unlike those addict shoppers I DON’T SPEND ANY MONEY. This is partially how I justify this to myself anyways haha.

Now to business lol. I am currently sitting on quite a few items to trade which are listed on Turrency.

Right now I am working on trading for my 2005 GTO up for a custom chopper; if this trade goes through I will literally have turned my GTO with a KBB.com value of 15,500 into a custom chopper with a NADA.com value of 45,995.

Impossible? I will update the blog once I definitively know one way or another.
